Summary

Research shows that the understanding of nonverbal signals is compromised when emotions are communicated across cultural boundaries. However, the mechanisms behind this well-established finding are not well understood. The proposed research aims to establish what causes this impairment in cross- cultural communication by comparing nonverbal emotion production and perception in Dutch and Chinese individuals. To directly test the effects of two proposed mechanisms, namely group identification and cultural exposure, three additional target groups that vary on these features will be examined. The results of this research will further our understanding of non-verbal communication of emotions and facilitate more effective cross-cultural communication.
