Summary

Previous research suggests that older workers may be more effective copers than younger workers in terms of handling stressful and negative events in the workplace, due to gains in emotional competencies (such as accurately perceiving, understanding, and regulating emotions). The goal of the PhD project is to empirically study age‐related differences in stable emotional competencies using novel test‐based measures, and to link these stable competencies to fluctuating emotion dynamics throughout a work day, using an intensive micro‐longitudinal design. A secondary focus of the project is on the moderating effects of current job conditions that may give rise to affective work events. Participants will be recruited from job sectors requiring human interaction, to ensure emotionally demanding job conditions. Participants will report on affective work events, emotion regulation strategies, and work‐relevant outcomes in multiple daily samplers for a time span of at least 10 working days. The project integrates different areas of psychology with the goal of understanding the emotional advantages of older workers in the workplace, and how these could contribute to organizational and team effectiveness.
