Summary

This project is designed to uncover nonverbal vocal expressions associated with specific positive emotions across cultures and the lifespan. The project consists of two sub-studies focusing on cross-cultural and cross-sectional comparisons of vocal signals of positive emotions, respectively. Cross-cultural data collection across three cultural groups (Japan, Namibia, and USA) will include video- recorded, experimenter-guided recall procedures for specific positive emotions as well as the cross-sectional data collection (from the age of 4 years). Acoustic analyses of the vocalisations will be conducted on both of the collected data sets, using PRAAT. All in all, this project will shed light on differentiation of positive emotions, considering similarities and differences across emotions, and taking into account cross-cultural and developmental features. Furthermore, the project also aims to develop new set of paradigms for eliciting a range of positive emotions.
