Summary

Unethical behaviors pose a serious concern to society. In this project, we seek to examine if suffering, a fundamental aspect of the human condition, could influence the tendency to engage in unethical behavior. First, we will empirically investigate if there are any associative and causal relationships between suffering and unethical behavior. If we do establish the existence of such relationships, we will delve deeper by examining the generalizability of the finding across various forms of suffering (e.g., stress, anxiety, loneliness, bullying) and unethical behavior (e.g., cheating, fraud, counterproductive work behavior). We will also probe the underlying psychological mechanisms of this phenomenon. Finally, building upon the previous findings in this project, we plan to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing unethical behavior.
