Summary

People have the fundamental need to belong. Social exclusion (also referred to as ostracism) threatens people’s sense of belonging and results in a wide range of negative effects (e.g., social pain, stress, low self-esteem, and antisocial behaviors). While existing literature has largely focused on these consequences of exclusion, the current project aims to further the understanding of social exclusion by investigating how people disclose their sense of belonging. Prior research shows that people strategically misrepresent information about payoffs hoping to increase their payoffs; we speculate that, similarly, people strategically disclose their belonging information in order to increase their chances to re-connect with others. To investigate this research question, we will use experimental methods and adopt a multi-perspective approach (targets, sources, and outsiders).
