Summary

Discontent with the society as a whole has been increasingly present over the years and across nations. Also, we see an increase in protests in Western societies. We propose that global discontent will lead to protests about specific issues, but only when it is triggered by a specific event. Thus, the interpretation of this event will be colored by latent discontent. After studying what lies at heart of discontent with society, we will investigate, by a series of experiments, whether people that experience discontent with society are more likely to undertake action in a collective way. In the process, we will take an interdisciplinary approach by using existing literature from sociology about anomie, and social psychology about intergroup processes, to fully understand the (symbolic) relationship between society and its members.
